Summary

The Georgia Archives is using a phased approach to building the system. The chart below illustrates past, current and future phases leading to full system implementation.

Budgetary constraints have taken their toll on the digital archives project, slowing down progress. The Georgia Archives continues with implementation planning (phase four) and has completed an architectural design concept. This concept is being slowly scaled out, with the initial site 1 (DAG) completion scheduled for FY2011 and site 2 (disaster mirror site) coming on-line some time in 2012-13.

Phase 5 is just beginning. Pilot testing the transfer and ingest processes with two state agencies is currently underway. Partnering with Clayton State University and its newly formed master of archival studies program, Archives staff are testing the use of BagIt, developed by the Library of Congress as par to the National Digital Infrastructure Preservation Program (NDIPP), with the Department of Transportation (GDOT). The first data transfer is expected to occur in mid-December with a second test to follow shortly thereafter at the beginning of the new year.

Beginning phase 5, several activities will take place:

  • Installation and testing of BagIt at the Archives
  • Development of procedures for agency use of software
  • Development of a design validation test plan
  • Training of agency staff on transfer procedures
  • Initial transfer of GDOT road construction project files
  • Debug process
  • Validate and verify transfer
  • Draft procedures for ingest into system

These activities will take place over the first several months of 2010. Additional activities in phase 5 include the development of internal processes for adding metadata, Drafting a formal preservation strategy for the GDOT records, and expanind the storage capabilities of the digital archives system.
