Georgia Board of Dispensing Opticians
The Georgia State Board of Dispensing Opticians is a six-member board appointed by the Governor to protect, promote and preserve the public health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Georgia. The Board is composed of five licensed, practicing dispensing opticians and one consumer member. The Board reviews applications, licenses qualified applicants and regulates the practice of the licensees throughout the state. Complaints are investigated and, if warranted, disciplinary action may be taken by the Board. Board meetings are held approximately four times each year at the Secretary of State’s office in Macon or by Teleconference, and are open to the public. Persons wishing to bring matters for the Board’s consideration should submit a written request to the office.
Licensed opticians prepare and dispense lenses, spectacles, eyeglasses, contact lenses and optical devices as authorized by a written prescription from an optometrist or physician skilled in diseases of the eye. Dispensing opticians can be considered for licensure after meeting specific educational or work experience requirements and examination.
NEW: PRACTICAL EXAM REQUIRED FOR LICENSURE
The GA Board of Examiners of Dispensing Opticians will no longer administer the Georgia Practical Exam.
There are NO exam fees paid to the Georgia Board. The vendors charge an exam fee and it is payable to the vendor only, not the Board. The fee for a dispensing optician license application is $115, made payable to the GA Board.
Effective January 1, 2016, in addition to the ABO/NCLE national competency exams (NOCE & CLRE), the ABO/NCLE Practical Exam will be required by the Board for licensure in Georgia as a dispensing optician. Once an application is approved by the Board, applicants will receive a letter of approval to contact ABO/NCLE to register and sit for the ABO/NCLE Practical Exam. Information on the ABO/NCLE Practical Exam will soon be available on their website, http://www.abo-ncle.org/
