GA Board of Prof. Counselors, Social Workers, and Marriage & Family Therapists

The Georgia Composite Board of Professional Counselors, Social Workers, and  Marriage and Family Therapists was created by an act of the General Assembly in 1984.  The Board consists of ten members appointed by the Governor: three professional counselors, three social workers, three marriage and family therapists, and one consumer member.

The Board is charged by law with regulating the practice of professional counseling, social work, and marriage and family therapy in order to protect the health, safety and welfare of the people of Georgia.  It does so by enforcing the education and training requirements established by law for licensure in each profession, by adopting and enforcing a code of ethics governing licensees, by establishing and enforcing continuing education requirements, and by addressing unlicensed practice in these professions.

Requests for an extension of the time frame in which to register and sit for the required licensure exam are completed by the administrative staff within ten (10) business days from the date of receipt in the Board office, and in the order they are received. You will be notified by e-mail of the Board decision. Extension requests are not guaranteed to be approved, you may be required to submit additional information, documentation or a new application. Please allow the Board's administrative staff time to process these requests before calling the Board office.

Verifications of Licensure from other state licensure Boards may be e-mailed to the Georgia Composite Board @:                          verifications@sos.ga.gov
