Open Borders Make American Citizen-Only Voting Amendment Critical for 2024 Election; Raffensperger Calls on General Assembly for Swift Action

Atlanta - Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger calls on the General Assembly to take immediate action to cement the vital election security measure that only U.S citizens can vote in U.S. elections into the Georgia Constitution. Georgia currently has the most seamless citizenship verification process in the nation but liberal groups are trying to use the Courts to overturn this vital election security measure prior to the 2024 election.

“With open borders, citizenship verification for voter registration is more important than ever,” said Secretary of State Raffensperger. “Organizations like the Georgia Coalition for the People’s Agenda are currently suing to end critical citizenship verification in our registration process, potentially exposing our elections to foreign interference, and diluting the power of legally registered voters. I’m calling on the General Assembly to take immediate action and pass a constitutional amendment ensuring that no liberal group can leverage the courts to add noncitizens to our voter rolls,” he said.

The state is currently being sued by liberal activists who want to eliminate the practice of citizenship verification before voters register to vote.

“Our system works,” said Brad Raffensperger. ”Failed candidates like Stacey Abrams, and the organization she founded, Fair Fight, have fought in court to eliminate citizenship verification for Georgia voters and they continue to fail in court.”

Roughly eight out of ten new Georgia voters apply for registration automatically when they get or update their driver’s license. The Department of Driver Services (DDS) is REAL ID certified and verifies citizenship status. Secretary Raffensperger was the first to conduct a full citizenship audit of Georgia voter rolls and work with Governor Kemp’s Department of Driver Services to ensure only American citizens vote in Georgia’s elections.

Georgia is recognized as a national leader in elections. It was the first state in the country to implement the trifecta of automatic voter registration, at least 17 days of early voting (which has been called the “gold standard”), and no-excuse absentee voting. Georgia continues to set records for voter turnout and election participation, seeing the largest increase in average turnout of any other state in the 2018 midterm election and record turnout in 2020, and 2022. 2022 achieved the largest single day of in-person early voting turnout in Georgia midterm history utilizing Georgia’s secure, paper ballot voting system. Most recently, Georgia ranked #1 for Election Integrity by the Heritage Foundation, a top ranking for Voter Accessibility by the Center for Election Innovation & Research and tied for number one in Election Administration by the Bipartisan Policy Center.
