Raffensperger Applauds General Assembly for Considering Federal Election Reform

October 9th, 2025

Atlanta - Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger commended the Blue Ribbon Committee on Election Procedures for following his call to amend the National Voter Registration Act.  Since taking office in 2019, Raffensperger has consistently promoted the state’s ongoing list maintenance efforts as a national model, while advocating for Congress to make the NVRA less prohibitive on state election administrators. By promoting Georgia as a national model for election reform, Raffensperger has urged Congress to implement photo ID for all federal elections, and a ban on non-citizen voting in all elections.

“I appreciate the committee for adding their weight behind my call to amend the NVRA. Next, we can propose a constitutional amendment banning noncitizen voting, and require photo ID using REAL ID for all forms of voting, for every federal election in the country,” said Raffensperger.

By placing a discussion of the NVRA on the agenda, the Georgia General Assembly is recognizing the barriers that federal law creates in local administration of elections.

While this is long overdue, it is a welcome sign that the Committee is engaging with issues that election administrators across the state have already flagged as critical to electoral integrity and registration list maintenance.

Over the past several years, Secretary Raffensperger has called for Congress to modernize the NVRA. In February 2023, he urged lawmakers to adopt “common-sense election reforms,” including updates to the NVRA to enhance security and public confidence in the registration process. More recently, in July 2025, he asked Congress to “reform the National Voter Registration Act to allow new technology to be used to keep voter lists up to date,” while urging adoption of Georgia-style list-maintenance procedures nationally.
