Raffensperger Commends House Leadership for Action on School Choice
Atlanta - Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger applauds the Georgia House of Representatives for today’s passage of SB 233, the Georgia Promise Scholarship Act. This historic legislation will increase access to educational opportunities for our students and empower the ones most invested in the educational success of Georgia’s children – their parents.
The House of Representatives demonstrated its commitment to Georgia students with the passage of SB 233. As passed, SB 233 will provide parents $6,500 per student to assist with their educational endeavors. This will allow the state portion of educational funding, in circumstances where the student is in a school in the bottom 25% of performance in the state, to follow the child to the school that the parents believe best meets the needs of their child. This legislation was championed in the House by Speaker Jon Burns and Speaker Pro Tempore Jan Jones.
“A quality education is a foundational element of a thriving, successful society,” said Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. “Whether our students matriculate to college or leave high school to enter the workforce right away, Georgia’s thriving and growing economy depends on educated workers and entrepreneurs. A quality education needs to be available for every student in Georgia. I want to specifically thank Speaker Burns for his tireless efforts on this crucial issue. His leadership on this was critical to its passage and Georgia families are indebted to him.”
The current version of the legislation must be approved by the Senate before heading to the Governor’s desk for his signature.
“Governor Kemp has indicated his strong support for this measure and I expect he will sign it,” Raffensperger said. “Georgia families are one step away from being able to make the educational choices that best suit their needs.”
