POSITION SUMMARY:
Under general supervision of the Investigations Area Supervisor, the Criminal Investigator III works with assigned Criminal Investigators in establishing priorities and coordinating activities, and resolving work related problems. The Criminal Investigator III is responsible for the training of new Criminal Investigators as well as conducting a full range of criminal, civil, and/or administrative Investigations having significantly greater complexity than those assigned at the Criminal Investigator I and Criminal Investigator II level. The Criminal Investigator III is the designated acting supervisor in absence of the Investigations Area Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Training of new Criminal Investigators in the standard operating procedures.
- May review cases of other Criminal Investigators prior to submission to the Supervisor.
- Act as supervisor in absence of Investigations Area Supervisor
- Assist Criminal Investigator I and Criminal Investigator II positions with cases that require an advanced level of job knowledge and expertise.
- Assist Criminal Investigators in the field by providing guidance and assistance for more complex or in-depth investigations.
- Support enforcement efforts of the Office of the Secretary of State as well as the various boards which operate in collaboration with the Office of the Georgia Secretary of State.
- Enforce Georgia statutes/policies and applicable rules of the boards.
- Investigate alleged or suspected violations of Federal, State, or local laws/rules and regulations.
- Conduct thorough and comprehensive Investigations of greater complexity than Criminal Investigator I and Criminal Investigator II level and prepare reports upon conclusion.
- Prepare and submit reports of greater complexity that detail investigative findings and proposed responses and/or resolutions.
- Examine and analyze records in order to locate links in chain of evidence or information.
- Identify case issues and evidence needed based on analysis of charges, complaints, or allegations of violations.
- Receive complaints and intelligence pertaining to possible violations of criminal and administrative statues, rules, and regulations under the authority or enforcement powers of the Secretary of State.
- Cooperate and collaborate with other state, local, and federal agencies on appropriate cases.
- Collaborate with other authorities on activities such as surveillance and research.
- Obtain and verify evidence by interviewing and observing suspects and witnesses or by analyzing records.
- Conduct background investigations.
- Provide testimony in criminal, administrative, and civil proceedings.
- Maintain mandatory P.O.S.T. in-service training requirements for certification.
- Statewide travel is required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION REQUIREMENTS:
Yes, establishing priorities and coordinating activities with Criminal Investigator I and II. Acting Supervisor upon absence of Investigations Area Supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Seven (7) years’ experience in law enforcement or related field. Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) (PBLE) certification in the state of Georgia is required. A valid driver’s license is required. Must be age 21 or older and a United States citizen and possess a strong moral character.
Note: Employment in this position is contingent upon the passing and certification of the required medical and physical examination process.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
At least two years of satisfactory service as a Criminal Investigator II in the Investigations Division of the Georgia Secretary of State’s office, must have performed at a “meets” expectations in each category for the two most recent SOS annual performance evaluations. Or have at least two (2) years of supervisory experience with the rank of Sergeant or higher. And have completed the following Georgia POST training courses:
- Interviews and Interrogations
- Criminal Procedure
- One (1) additional approved POST Investigative related course
- Supervision Certificate
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent.
