Position Summary
Under broad supervision of the Deputy Chief , the Special Agent in Charge (SAC) directs and supervises the day-to-day activities of a unit of special agents in the investigation of administrative and criminal violations and enforcement of all areas under the authority of the Georgia Secretary of State.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise Special Agents and Inspector Supervisors.
- Conduct complex investigations, prepare reports and warrants, collect evidence and testify in court.
- Participate with investigations and assist with investigators’ duties as needed.
- Assist in preparing policy, budgets, and represents the departments at meetings and seminars.
- Supervise other agents.
- Assign and prioritize case workloads.
- Reassign cases within 1 week of any Special Agent leaving Agency.
- Supervisor (or ASAC) will personally conduct quarterly vehicle inspections on approved form and submit scanned inspections to Deputy Chief. 1st quarter due by March 31st, 2nd Quarter by June 30th, 3rd Quarter September 30th, 4th Quarter by December 31st.
- Determine scope, timing, and direction of investigations.
- Obtain information related to cases.
- Identify case issues and evidence needed based on analysis of charges, complaints, or allegations of law violations.
- Prepare reports that detail investigation findings.
- Collaborate with other agencies as necessary.
- Obtain and verify evidence by interviewing and observing suspects and witnesses, or by analyzing records.
- Conduct background investigations.
- Assist in recruiting and selection of new special agents.
- Supervise and plan work of assigned staff.
- Conduct performance reviews of supervised staff.
- Maintain mandatory P.O.S.T. in-service training requirements for certification.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Seven (7) years’ experience in law enforcement or related field, and two (2) years of experience in a law enforcement Investigator supervisory position. Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) (PBLE) certification in the state of Georgia is required. A valid driver’s license is required. Must be age 21 or older and a United States citizen, and possess a strong moral character

Education Requirement
Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent.

- Ability to exercise sound judgment and decision-making.
- Ability to write clear concise reports in appropriate styles and formats.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and agency laws, policies, procedures and regulations.
- Ability to review the work of others to ensure it meets agency quality standards.
- Ability to work effectively with personnel in other state and federal agencies and private organizations.
- Ability to use proper and effective interview techniques.
- Ability to manage cases.
- Skills in management include ability to supervise and direct professional and support staff.
- Ability to coach and train other personnel in investigative techniques and case management.
- Knowledge of legal procedures and processes.
- Ability to assist in developing policies for the agency.
- Ability to effect arrests.
- Knowledge of law enforcement databases and other available sources of information.
- Knowledge of court and administrative proceedings.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- A minimum of two (2) years’ experience at the rank of Lieutenant or higher or four (4) years at the rank of Sergeant or higher.
