Special Election Set for District Attorney, Griffin Judicial Circuit
(Atlanta) -- Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger announced Wednesday the date of the special election required for the Griffin Judicial Circuit District Attorney, which became vacant due to the appointment of The Honorable Ben Coker to the Superior Court of the Griffin Judicial Circuit.
The special election will be held on February 9, 2020 for the circuit, which includes parts of Fayette, Pike, Spalding, and Upson Counties. A run-off, if needed, shall be held on March 9, 2021.
Qualifying for the Griffin Judicial Circuit District Attorney special election will be held at the in the Elections Division of the Office of Secretary of State, 2 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SE, West Tower Suite 802, Atlanta, Georgia 30334. The qualifying period will be on Wednesday, December 16, 2020 beginning at 9:00 a.m. and ending at 5:00 p.m.; Thursday, December 17, 2020 beginning at 8:00 a.m. and ending at 5:00 p.m.; and Friday, December 18, 2020 beginning at 8:00 a.m. and ending at 1:00 p.m. The qualifying fee shall be $3,674.20.
Monday, January 11, 2021 is the last day to register to vote for the special election. Advance in-person absentee voting will begin on Monday, January 18, 2021.
Georgia is recognized as a national leader in elections. It was the first state in the country to implement the trifecta of automatic voter registration, at least 16 days of early voting (which has been called the “gold standard”), and no-excuse absentee voting. Georgia continues to set records for voter turnout and election participation, seeing the largest increase in average turnout of any other state in the 2018 midterm election and record turnout in 2020, with over 1.3 million absentee by mail voters and over 3.6 million in-person voters utilizing Georgia’s new, secure, paper ballot voting system.
