The National Voter Registration Act of 1993, or Motor Voter, adds ways to register to vote by requiring organizations beyond the Secretary of State’s office to offer voter registration. It also authorizes the U.S. Department of Justice to bring civil actions in federal court to enforce its requirements.

The Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot (FWAB) can be used to register to vote. If you are using the FWAB to register to vote, it must be received by the registration deadline. You can use the FWAB to vote in federal, state and local elections, including ballot measures.

To ensure that each agency is conducting voter registration according to federal and state code, the Secretary of State has prepared guides and training material for your use. Please contact your county registrar office for assistance, procedures and materials.

If you are a U.S. citizen, you can provide proof of citizenship at your county registrar’s office or at your polling place when you go to vote.

Senior school officials are required to be deputy voter registrars to assist their students in applying for voter registration. The requirement applies to every high school, college, university and technical college, whether public or private.

VoteSafe Reminder

Victims of family violence or stalking can keep their home address from being released in the publicly available list of voters. The VoteSafe program also protects those who reside in a family-violence shelter. 

Please refer anyone requesting information about the VoteSafe program to their county registrar or VoteSafe.
