How To Gain Approval for Dry Needling
How To Apply
Since September 1, 2012, physical therapists desiring approval to perform dry needling in Georgia were required to provide the Board proof of education in OSHA Blood Borne Pathogens Standard and dry needling instruction consisting of a minimum of 50 hours total and competency assessment and achievement in a dry needling curriculum. You may not use Dry Needling techniques in Georgia without gaining approval from the board. Dry Needling permissions in the State of Georgia are available only to Georgia PT License Holders and PT Compact Privilege Holders.
Follow the steps outlined in these sections, below.
For Georgia PT License Holders
In order to demonstrate that you have received specific and competent education and training in dry needling and be approved to receive the designation on your license, you must do the following:
Georgia PT license holders may gain approval of the Georgia State Board of Physical Therapy to engage in the practice of dry needling in the state of Georgia by providing the following documentation:
- Enter proof of education in the OSHA Blood Borne Pathogens Standard into CE Broker.
- Enter a minimum of 50 hours total and a competency assessment of achievement in dry needling curriculum (in accordance with Board Rule 490-9-.05) into CE Broker.
- Log into your GOALS account. From your dashboard, select the license tab at the top of the page. You will see a table below listing your license numbers. Find the row that lists your current PT license number and click the ellipses at the end of the row to reveal a drop down menu. Select "Amend License." Then select "Dry Needling" Approval and continue to begin the application process.
After review of the documentation, you will receive correspondence to your email from the GOALS system concerning your amendment request. If you are approved by the Board, the designation will be added to your license. You will be able to verify its presence using the “License Search” feature on the Board website. If it is not approved, you will be informed of the deficiencies noted by email from the GOALS system. You will be able to upload any information in response to your deficiency notice directly into your amendment application via GOALS. If the deficiencies are satisfied, the designation will be added to your license. If they are not satisfied, you will receive another deficiency notice. Please be aware that if any outstanding deficiencies are not satisfied within 60 days of the date of the initial deficiency notice, the amendment will be withdrawn.
