History Of The Georgia Board Of Nursing
On August 22, 1907, the Georgia General Assembly passed legislation to create what would become known as the Georgia Board of Nursing. The newly created Board was tasked with regulating the growing field of registered professional nurses, as well as overseeing registered nursing education programs. The new legislation authorized then Governor M. Hoke Smith to appoint five members to the Board that would act on behalf of the citizens of Georgia. As such, on September 23, 1907, the first members of the Board were appointed and sworn into office. Less than a month later, on October 19, 1907, the first meeting of the Georgia Board of Nursing was called to order.

Board Services
The Georgia Board of Nursing licenses nurses through examination and endorsement from other states. Additionally, the Board approves qualified registered nurses to enter practice as advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), including nurse anesthetists, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, and nurse midwives.
Applications are typically reviewed within fifteen business days from the receipt of all required documents. Issues such as past criminal behavior or previous disciplinary actions may substantially lengthen these time lines to allow for Board or disciplinary staff review.
Licensure services include:
- Approval of an applicant to sit for the NCLEX
- Issuance of a license following successful examination
- Issuance of a permanent license upon completion of all application requirements
- Renewal of a nursing license
- Approval of full APRN authorization following completion of all application requirements
- Renewal of APRN authorization
The Georgia Board of Nursing approves nursing education programs which prepare nurses for initial entry into nursing practice. There are currently fifty-one registered nursing education programs and twenty-five practical nursing education programs approved by the Board as of April 1, 2015.
Nursing Education Program Approval Services Include:
- Annual review of approval status of all nursing education programs
- Routine site visits to all nursing education programs to determine continuing approval status. Additional site visits may be scheduled in response to a drop in the pass rate of graduates on the NCLEX or complaints from consumers.
- Consultation and guidance for programs out of compliance with Board regulations
The Georgia Board of Nursing enforces the Nursing Practice Act and Board Rules and Regulations by setting minimum standards for nursing practice and nursing education, conducting investigations of complaints against nurses, and adjudicating complaints.
O.C.G.A. §43-1-19(12)(d) provides that the Board can take any one or more of the following disciplinary actions:
- Refuse to grant or renew a license to an applicant.
- Administer a public or private reprimand.
- Suspend any license for a definite period or for an indefinite period in connection with any condition which may be attached to the restoration of said license.
- Limit or restrict any license as the Board deems necessary for the protection of the public.
- Revoke any license.
- Condition the penalty upon, or withhold formal disposition pending, the applicant's or licensee's submission to such care, counseling, or treatment as the board may direct.
- Impose a fine not to exceed $500.00 for each violation of a law, rule, or regulation relating to the practice of nursing.
- Impose on a licensee or applicant fees or charges in an amount necessary to reimburse the Board for the administrative and legal costs incurred by the Board in conducting an investigative or disciplinary proceeding.
- Complaints may be submitted online using the online complaint form or by mailing the complaint to the following address.

Any person who has knowledge of conduct by a licensed nurse that may violate the Georgia Nurse Practice Act, Board Rule or related state or federal law may report the alleged violation to the Georgia Board of Nursing.
This tool is designed to assist nurse leaders and employers in determining action steps for adverse events/errors or unprofessional conduct involving a nurse. The pathway provides questions regarding system error, mitigating factors and behavioral choices of the nurse which, when used with data from your investigation, will promote a consistent framework for making important patient safety decisions.
In addition to the considerations in the pathway, nurse leaders should be aware of the mandatory reporting requirements contained in the Nurse Practice Act and other provisions in state law/regulations for reporting death or serious injury resulting from adverse event/error.
