Renewal of License

  • License renewal is conducted online and must be completed by June 30 of even-numbered years.
  • A late renewal period is available from July 1 to July 31 of even-numbered years.

After you Apply – What to Expect

  • Processing Time – Applications are generally processed within 20 business days of receipt, excluding weekends and holidays. Applications are individually evaluated by the Board in order of date received, and processing times can vary based on individual circumstances and volume.
    • If you receive a deficiency letter, your 20-day count restarts when the Board receives your correct and complete documentation.
  •  Incomplete Applications Policy - Incomplete applications may be      withdrawn if noted deficiencies are not satisfied within 60 days of said notification. If your application is withdrawn, you will be required to restart the application process to be considered for licensure, including submission of all required documents and fees.
    • Completed applications will first be reviewed by Board staff and may then be presented to the Board at a scheduled meeting.
    • Applications must be complete at least 15 days before a Board meeting to be included on that meeting’s agenda. If not, they will be reviewed at the following meeting.

  • Keep Your Contact Info Up to Date
    • Be sure the email address you include for yourself on your application is correct and current. Email is the primary means of communication used by the Board.
    • Additionally, it is important for applicants/licensees to update their email address with the Board just as they would update their physical and mailing addresses.
  • License is required to work
    • You may not legally perform services until you hold an active license.
    • Staff will communicate with you regarding the status of your application, and you may check your application status online.

Veterans Preference Points

Veterans, military service members, transitioning service members and military spouses of the armed forces of the United States, including the National Guard, may be eligible for exam point credits and/or expedited application processes. Download program information>>

  • If you are claiming Veteran’s Preference Points, you must enclose a copy of your DD-214 form, showing that you served during a period of conflict or war for a minimum of 90 days. Contact the VA to request make a DD-214 Request >>

Electrical Contractor - Restricted

If you have never held this license, you may apply for Licensure by Exam. The Board must grant approval for you to sit for the exam.

Electrical Contractor - Non-Restricted

If you have never held an Electrical Contractor- Non- Restricted License, complete the licensure by examination. You will need Board approval to sit for exam.

Electrical Contractor - Non-Restricted, Reinstatement

If you have previously held an Electrical Contractor- Non-Restricted license and it has been expired or lapsed for less than three years, submit a reinstatement application.

Electrical Contractor - Non-Restricted, Reciprocity

Apply for reciprocity if you have a current license with no violations and obtained by exam from Alabama, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, or Tennessee.

Electrical Contractor, Reinstatement (Lapsed 3 Years Or More) - Restricted or Non-Restricted

If you have previously held an Electrical Contractor license and it has been lapsed or expired for three or more years, submit a reinstatement application and fee. Passing of an exam is required before a license is issued.

Electrical Contractor Renewal

To renew your current/active license, complete your online renewal application by June 30 of even-numbered years for on-time renewal. Late renewal is July 1 to July 31 of even-number years, and a late fee will be added.
