Veterinary Specialist License

A Veterinary Specialist License may be issued to a graduate of a foreign college or school of veterinary medicine who has submitted a complete application to the Board, to include, but not limited to, a transcript certifying completion of his or her education in veterinary medicine and proof of completing a residency program or similar training duration program of two or more years and has received board certification from a veterinary medicine specialty organization recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Board of Veterinary Specialties, or other American Veterinary Medical Association board approved organization.

Veterinary Specialist License FAQ

The holder of a Veterinary Specialist License is qualified to practice within that specialty ONLY. He or she may not engage in the general practice of veterinary medicine. Any other practice of veterinary medicine shall be deemed a violation of subsection (a) of Code Section 43-50-30 and subsection (a) of Code Section 43-50-45 and upon substantiation thereof, authorizes the Board to act pursuant to O.C.G.A. § 43-50-41(d)(1-6).

Veterinary Specialists license holder is required to provide prior written notice to all clients that their practice is limited to the identified specialty. Such notice must be signed by the client and a copy maintained in the medical record.

Yes. Pursuant to 43-50-40(a) the Veterinary Specialist license must be renewed. Joint Secretary Rule 295-2-.10 stipulates that all veterinary licenses expire on or before December 31st of even numbered years.

Yes. Pursuant to 43-50-40(a) all licenses issued by this Board shall be renewable biennially. The Board shall also establish continuing professional veterinary medical education requirements for the renewal of the license. Please review Board Rule 700-7-.03.

Licensees are also encouraged to monitor the Board website periodically for any changes to continuing education requirements.
